Heat Pumps

We've summarized some of the most frequently asked questions around heat pumps so you can update your home!

What is a heat pump?

Heat pumps use electricity rather than natural gas to efficiently transfer heat into a home. A mini-split is a ductless heat pump that delivers warm or cool air to a single room with the same equipment. Heat pumps can also be connected to duct systems to supply heating and cooling to several rooms and are compatible with other systems, such as swamp coolers.

Why should I get a heat pump?

Every year, natural gas for residential and commercial buildings emits 778 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide, more than 97% of all countries in the world. The global natural gas supply is projected to run out in the next 50 years, and it will soon become more expensive as we reach depletion. Heat pumps use electricity, which can be sourced from renewable energy sources, and are three times more efficient than natural gas. Our personal carbon footprint can be reduced by 9 - 13% when we use heat pumps.

What are some checklist items for installation?

  • By properly insulating and sealing your doors and windows, you will save energy, money and emissions.

  • Find a local contractor with experience in heat pump installation.

  • A contractor will size the system, and only cold climate heat pumps should be installed.

  • Heat pumps require room in your electrical panel, so the contractor will also calculate your heat load to size them. Usually, there is space; if not, extra wiring is needed, adding to the cost.

  • After rebates, a typical whole house heat pump system costs $10 - 15,000 and lasts for decades.

What rebates are available?

There are a variety of rebate sources available. Make sure you check all of them before starting your project to ensure that your contractor and equipment qualify.

Most rebates are applied for by contractors. You can often receive more than one rebate for a single installation, and income-qualified customers may receive bigger rebates. Click links below to check average rebates.
